Lunch and Learn: Special Needs Planning
An effective special needs planning process is holistic, comprehensive, and tailored to the individual needs of every member of a family. This type of planning is directed to families with at least one member identified as having a disability as they often require specific legal protections that will provide lifelong support while maintaining access to public benefits, as appropriate. Holistically, special needs planning addresses legal documents, asset protection, and personal care needs and supports. The comprehensive focus involves addressing the needs of every member of the family. This is a critically important feature as many individuals with special needs rely on their family members for support and therefore the well-being of ALL members is paramount and should be included in the process. And finally, the tailored approach to special needs planning consists of ensuring every document, service, support, and need is addressed in a way that is meaningful and aligned with the preferences of every individual involved.”
