August doesn’t have the same feeling as it has in past years. We do not have any of the typical anticipation of back to school. This year it is all about finding our balance. Everything is just so different. Our goals have been to stay safe and to stay healthy for ourselves and any we may be exposed to. Summer has not had many outings or adventures, by our choice. But, I would be lying if I said it hasn’t been hard! I have longed for some “normalcy” and some fun with friends and family. Finding things to do has not been easy. This past weekend we did venture to Charlottesville for some “river floating”, it felt great, the ability to socially distance was there and I was with my family in the water. First time all year!
Finding the temporary joy is important. Knowing we are making safe choices and that we aren’t doing that alone really helps. The calls or texts from friends that are feeling stuck, that also have turned around upon reaching a crowded destination; has been comforting in these tough moments. For those of us raising loved ones with special needs, we also realize we aren’t alone in the decision making of having to set boundaries. Remember, for each picture, post or conversation of adventures being had, there is the non post of the ones feeling stuck and unable to make it happen. There are many failed attempts at fun, we just do not see them. There are many declined invitations and sad faces at the “no, we can’t” . Having the conversations to say no or decline, is hard, but it is happening and it is important to do what feels right for you.
CHOICES, that seems to be the recurring theme right now, and my hope is that you all are making the ones that feel good for you and your family. With school approaching, many are making tough decisions. I send all good thought your way in having to make yours.
We will be sharing some tips for those that will be doing virtual learning, and some great resources from local organizations. We will also bring back some fun with apps, books and favorite items.
