App Of The Month

August 3, 2015 By Carissa Garabedian

0001-43149553With all things Back To School, we thought this would be a good app to look at in helping to aid your children with schedules.
Visual cues are so helpful for our son and this app makes it super easy to create and follow.
It is also at a low cost of $3.99.
Routines can be tailored to their needs with audio feedback, and customizable pictures, audio, and text.
Instead of carrying around pecs or a laminated schedule, this app will let you have routines preset and then run them to show the child in an easy way what they have to do.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Review by Cole Szymonik

July 13, 2015 By Carissa Garabedian

me-earl-dying-girlMe and Earl and the Dying Girl
Very recently, my mother took me to see a movie, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. I was not certain about the movie (Oh, look, a movie about a girl with cancer! THAT hasn’t been done before. *cough* Fault in our Stars *cough*), but it turned out to be very good. Mom said that it would be a good idea to write a review of the movie, as well. I was also not certain about this activity (Oh, look, a movie about a girl with cancer! And I am reviewing it, despite never having done a movie review in my life! THAT should be easy to do properly!). Anyway, this is a new experience for me, so I hope that the readers of the internet will bear with me.
To begin, I will need to describe the plotline of the movie. (spoilers ahead) The movie centers around protagonist Greg Gaines (Thomas Mann), an invisible high school student with low selfesteem and a penchant for making parodies of foreign movies. He becomes fast friends with Rachel (Olivia Cooke), the titular “Dying Girl”, after she gets Leukemia. Unlike typical cancer movies, the focus is primarily on the lives, misadventures of Greg, Rachel, and Earl (R.J. Cyler). As Rachel’s condition worsens, the story focuses slightly more on her suffering and Greg’s attempts to make a movie to cheer her up.
All in all, I’d give this movie a 3.45 out of 4 stars. The movie was good enough to make me laugh (and cry (manly tears, mind you)), and it’s not often that movies elicit that reaction from me. I consider the ending a bit of a low blow, though, in that I feel that the movie is tricking me. To understand this, you’ll have to watch the movie yourself. Yep, you’ll need to buckle down and actually watch the darn movie instead of just listening to some 15yearold finagle his way through his first review. Honestly, though, the movie was excellent, and I highly recommend watching it.
Catch you guys later,
Cole Szymonik

What does it mean to Speak with Good Purpose?

April 20, 2015 By Autastic Avenues

Words are powerful. They can help and they can hurt. What we say to others – and to ourselves – can have a huge impact. Speaking with good purpose is about always considering the intention of our words. If we think before we speak instead of blurting out whatever comes to mind, we can learn to consider the reason for our words and make sure we are speaking with good purpose. We do not have to say everything we think!

App Review

March 9, 2015 By Carissa Garabedian

PastedGraphic-1At Autastic Avenues , we have been using The Social Express® by The Language Express, Inc., for a long time. In our opinion, it is the best app for children who experience the social learning challenges associated with ADHD, ASD, and general social learning deficits. The engaging webisodes teach how to manage social situations and how to deal with stressful ones.

Motivating and Rewarding Learners

March 1, 2015 By Carissa Garabedian

image1Regardless of our working titles (parent, therapist, teacher), we are all educators for our children. We are responsible for teaching our children how to be the best “them” that they can be. In order to be effective educators, we should keep foremost in our minds what it is that motivates our child to learn. If we have a child with special needs, we are required to become creative in the motivational techniques we employ to engage children in the learning process.
