November is here, I was hoping that we could enjoy the month with the simplicty of gratitude and the beautiful season around us, then I walked into a store on 10/31 and heard Christmas music along with trees up! NOOOOOO! I am not losing my goal. Let’s try to keep the focus on each day and find a moment of thanks in the simple things around us. As special need parents, we are given challenges that others do not have. We should try to embrace all that we can to help find the simple joys around us. This month I will have a few articles on just that. Plus, we are going to do a Facebook and site search to share as many families as we can to share something simple that you are thankful for. If you want to join in, send me a note here.
“CHERBOYS: Be Part of Something Great”
My name is Jordan Clevey and I am 24 years old. I’m from Richmond, VA and graduated Trinity Episcopal School in 2010 and Graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Sport & Recreation Management from James Madison University in 2016. I led Young Life Capernaum in Harrisonburg/ Rockingham County for 2 years and now am a volunteer Young Life leader at Deep Run High School in Glen Allen, VA. A little over a year and a half ago I felt led to do something. I love creating and making and knew that I need to do something with that ability. I wanted to make something where we were able to sell and give back a good portion of the money we made. So that July I taught myself how to screen print by watching videos online and reading blogs on printing. I immediately fell in love with the process and loved it. I have always like to draw, doodle and design and now here I was in my parents kitchen drawing and designing a logo that meant something much greater than I could ever come up with. That is how CHERBOYS was created.

Symptoms of A Concussion
It is that time of year again when tailgates, hotdogs, bonfires, and football beckon us every weekend. So, it also means it is that time of year again to remind all athletes, parents and coaches about the signs and symptoms of a concussion.
The best weapon we have is concussion prevention and awareness. I know I have written about it before but there is still so much education to do. It is so important to our children’s developing brains that we do all we can to prevent concussions in the first place. Therefore, I think this bares repeating. All kids should wear properly fitted helmets and other safety gear when playing contact sports, biking, rollerblading, and skateboarding; or any other outdoor activity where speed and force can be an impact.
Unfortunately, kids will be kids and accidents happen. So, it is essential that parents and coaches are able to recognize the common signs and symptoms of a concussion so that children can get prompt treatment and cognitive rest. It is important to monitor children even when they seem to feel okay because a concussion is a moving target and symptoms can sometimes develop hours later. When we miss or dismiss such complaints, we put children at risk for recurrence and more prolonged recovery.

Next ASCV Sibshop For All Kids/ Siblings with a Disability
We’ll Be “All Fired Up” at November 12 Sibshop!
The ASCV hosts bi-monthly Sibshops as an opportunity for brothers and sisters of children with any developmental disabilities to obtain peer support and education in a fun recreational environment. In November, All Fired Up will join us; participants will build and paint a wet clay piece and also paint a 4″ tile!
Our Sibshops are open to any sibling, ages 7-12, of a child with a special need. We meet every other month from 10am to noon. Sibshops acknowledge that being the brother or sister of a person with special needs is for some a good thing, for others a not-so-good thing, and for many somewhere in between. The Sibshop model intersperses information and discussion activities with recreation and games (designed to be unique, off-beat, and appealing). Registration closes on November 7. Learn more and register here: http://ascv.org/meetings-events/sibshops/.

This month we focus on books that are geared to the siblings of the kids with special needs. There is so much to write about with this, the siblings carry burdens and have lots to share. Days can be extra stressful when their sibling does things in a “different” way. Sometimes there is shame, fear and many other emotions.
Here are some books covering this geared to all age groups.

50 Things I’ve Learned at 50
Many of you have read that I turned 50 . I shared that I had a great party with family and friends and that I have a bucket list I am slowly filling. What I am focusing on now is a little more important, it holds some substance and some life lessons. I want to share them with you. Maybe one or two of them will hold true for you, maybe not. But, I am such a believer in sharing and learning from one another that I want to hope this may offer one person the moment of feeling not alone. I also want to have it written so that I can use it as a tool to reflect on when I need it.

Airlines That Make Accommodations For Special Needs
Did you know that some airlines will accommodate for Special Needs travelers? Some of the websites will show accommodations for those with physical disabilities, some also state Autism, but, I have found that when you call, all special needs can be requested and that each airline may offer steps to help.
