Join Next Steps Behavioral Center for its April Speaker Series on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at 6 PM – 7:30 PM at
Next Steps Behavioral Centers (9351 W Broad Street, Richmond, Virginia 23294).
This month’s topic: Disability Benefits: VA’s Medicaid Waivers and Social Security with Speaker, Tammy Burns, Family Support Specialist.
Families with special needs children need to have an understanding of government benefits available to them as part of planning a future for their loved one. These benefits can help supplement a person’s income, qualify a person for extra help, and help them receive healthcare and community supports. Navigating the world of disability benefits can be tricky, time consuming and overwhelming. This workshop will help make that process easier. Join us as we discuss in clear understandable language: what are VA’s Medicaid Waivers and what are Social Security benefits, who is eligible, and how do I apply.
Tammy Burns is a Family Support Specialist at Virginia’s Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center (PEATC). She began her career as an elementary school teacher in Chesterfield County. She attended many IEP meetings as a teacher, but then in 2000 when her middle son Jared was diagnosed with autism, Tammy experienced IEPs from the “other side of the table.” Because of this, she then decided to go back to school and pursue her Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction degree with a concentration on Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Tammy is also a graduate from Virginia’s Partners in Policymaking program. She has served as the Chair of the Chesterfield County Special Education Advisory Committee. Tammy is passionate about empowering individuals with disabilities and their parents/guardians with the knowledge and tools that they need to be successful advocates.
