Yesterday, an announcement was made stating that $18 million dollars being cut from federal funding for the Special Olympics. In addition, another cut of millions for a project that would help those with autism and other disorders while an increase of $60 million is proposed for charter school funds. WHY? Our children deserve to be seen and to participate! Our children are as important.
We did not plan on needing, wanting or seeking programs like the Special Olympics, but, we have found family, friends, and support through them and our children need them.
This was last year’s Big Feet Meet, who is going to tell my guy that the one place he can be a part of a team and compete, will now be taken away? As a parent that has attended these events the past 5 years, I know the joy, I have seen the victory and I have watched his typical peers and adults gain insight. THAT is priceless and should be seen and valued by all. This should not be up for any discussion.
My heart hurts. Again.
I will keep fighting and hoping that this guy gets to “reach and jump for his dreams”.
