Have you heard about the Deep Run Marathon Dance? I have been fortunate enough to experience this first hand as I have had two children attending Deep Run. This Dance changes lives each year, not only for the local organizations chosen, but for the students who participate and learn so much!
Students of the school can voluntarily sign up to dance for 27 hours. Each one that dances must raise money on their own , reaching out to the community and family/ friends. They dance in the gym for 27 hours and it ends with a celebration awarding monies to the groups chosen . In the last 8 years the school community has raised over 1.3 MILLION dollars! Isn’t that amazing?!
The 2015 DRMD has announced this year’s recipients. This year the students will be dancing for the following worthy causes:
Boys to Men Mentoring Network of VA – Boys to Men Mentoring of Virginia raises awareness about the challenges facing boys, and to motivate caring adult males to provide boys with mentoring and modeling so that they learn integrity, accountability, compassion and respect and guide them toward healthy manhood.
CARITAS – CARITAS mobilizes Greater Richmond through its congregations to protect individuals and families in crisis and empowers those who strive for housing independence.
ChildSavers – Memorial Child Guidance Clinic – ChildSavers aims to guide our community’s children through life’s critical moments with trauma-informed mental health and child development services.
Jacob’s Chance, Inc. – The mission of Jacob’s Chance Inc. is to enrich the lives of children and young adults with special needs along with their families through shared activities, athletics, socialization, and education; while promoting acceptance, understanding, and inclusion through public awareness.
Legal Information Network for Cancer (LINC) – This nonprofit, community-based organization is dedicated to helping cancer patients, survivors, and their families with the business side of cancer. LINC provides information, education and referral services for legal, financial, and community resources to individuals confronted with the overwhelming issues that arise from the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
Make-A-Wish Greater Virginia – Wishes that Make-A-Wish grants are more than just a nice thing. A wish experience can be a game changer for a child with a life threatening medical condition.
National Alliance on Mental Illness of Central Virginia (NAMI-CVA) – NAMI Central Virginia promotes recovery and seeks to improve the lives of Central Virginians with serious mental illness through education, support, resources, advocacy, and anti-stigma campaigns. NAMI Central Virginia proudly provides free education programs and support for individuals, families, and the Central Virginia Community.
National Multiple Sclerosis Society – Central & Eastern Virginia Chapter – The National Multiple Sclerosis Society wants to do something about Multiple Sclerosis now to move together toward a world free of multiple sclerosis. Multiple Sclerosis stops people from moving we exists to make sure it doesn’t.
Northstar Academy – With a strong spirit of community, Northstar Academy develop students with active, creative minds and encourage compassion and a respect and understanding for individual differences and for one another. Ultimately, Northstar Academy creates an atmosphere that addresses the unique needs of our students in a changing society and culminates with their becoming active citizens and responsible stewards of the world.
Richmond Hope Therapy Center – Richmond Hope Therapy Center aims to provide superior quality therapy services combining traditional therapy with complementary methods of treatment, embracing the needs of patients with a variety of diagnoses, and encouraging patients and families to reach their full potential.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society – The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society aims to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of patients and their families. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society helps blood cancer patients live better, longer lives.
The McShin Foundation – The McShin Foundation is Virginia’s leading non-profit, full service Recovery Community Organization, committed to serving individuals and families in their fight against Substance Use Disorders.
