Volunteer Spotlight: Sam Bellamy
27-year-old Sam Bellamy has big dreams and the determination to make them happen. Her biggest dream is to start a nonprofit that serves children who have experienced trauma. To get there, Sam has completed her CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) certification as well as her Medication Technician certification, and she currently works nights as a Medication Technician Supervisor at Spring Arbor Memory Care Facility. She is also enrolled at J Sargeant Reynolds, working toward an Associate Degree in Human Services AND an Associate Degree as a Registered Nurse. In addition to all that, she is the mother of a 5- and 6-year-old who she says, “motivate me every day. I can’t give up. I don’t want them thinking ‘My mom didn’t finish college, why should I?’ Every day when I wake up, I think of them and keep going.” To complete her Human Services degree and graduate in May, Sam needs to complete 130 hours of direct service at a non-profit. She chose Greater Richmond ARC. “I enjoy working with all different kinds of people, and I enjoy giving back and making a difference. ARC seems like a place where I can do that.” With everything going on in her busy schedule, Sam comes three times a week to ARC to serve as an Adult Day Program support intern. “I like it. I like everyone that I have met and they have been so welcoming. It feels good to be able to share what I have to give with them. There’s a lot of joy here and it makes me happy. It’s helping me achieve my goals and it’s part of my new beginning.” Committed volunteers like Sam help ARC to create life-fulfilling opportunities for people with disabilities.
