What is Treatment Foster Care?
‘TFC’ stands for Treatment Foster Care. In TFC, the children we serve typically come with emotional, behavioral, or medical issues that require them to have a more supportive environment. Embrace TFC specializes in providing an extra level of training and support for those foster parents willing to become Treatment Foster Parents.
Debunking Some Common Myths about Foster Care:
MYTH
I have to be married to be a foster parent.
FACT
There are countless single, divorced, and widowed individuals who are loving, life-changing foster parents across the country. Fostering is also an option for couples who are technically unmarried but life-partners.
MYTH
I cannot foster children because I will get too attached.
FACT
It’s true — you will get attached, and it will be painful when children you love leave. But, you have the peace of knowing that no matter how long a foster child lived with you, they were able to experience a loving, happy home for that time. The lessons that they learn while being your foster child will stay with them for the rest of their lives!
MYTH
I have to own my own home to be a foster parent.
FACT
Foster parents can reside in homes they own or rent, including apartments, condos, or duplexes. There are requirements for how many foster children you can care for depending on the number of bedrooms you have available.
MYTH
People only foster when they are trying to adopt.
FACT
There are different kinds of foster children. Yes, some are “pre-adoptive” and need a new adoptive home, but many children are considered “temporary placements,” where they only need a loving foster family for a short period of time. You can choose which of these options better fits your specific life situation.

– Foster / Adoptive Mother | Richmond, VA 2015
“I was 30…never been married and didn’t have any children of my own but felt like this was something I was called to do…Little did I know that I wasn’t going to just change a child’s life, but they were going to change mine. I was able to quickly finish my paperwork and training with the help of the amazing caseworkers at Embrace and was placed with my first foster child one month after being certified!
– Foster Mother | Alexandria, VA 2016
“As lifelong foster parents, we were more than impressed with their training. Embrace provides more support than any other agency we have worked with.”
– Foster Father | Roanoke, VA 2014
“We have two biological children, a boy and a girl. They are the light of our lives, but we’ve always felt that our family is not complete yet. That’s why we decided to take the leap and become foster parents! It’s been one of the most rewarding experiences to be able to show a child what love and security looks like. We are not sure how long he will be a part of our family, but he will always be a part of our hearts.”
– Foster Father | Fredericksburg, VA 2015
