Get your elementary school child off to a great start this school year with these 8 simple suggestions.
With the beginning of school just around the corner and thoughts beginning to shift to buying supplies and clothes, this is the perfect time to begin thinking of ways to support your child as he or she transitions to a new school year. Research shows that students generally lose the equivalent of one month of overall learning over the summer months.* In order to give your child a head start on the new academic year, try incorporating the following into your child’s routine:
1. Daily reading of at least 20 minutes (parent or child led)
2. Journal writing or drawing pictures describing summer activities
3. Verbal expression practice such as giving details of the day’s events in sequential order using complete sentences (parent modeled if necessary)
4. Review of skills that are still being mastered such as printing letters or multiplication facts
5. Movement activities such bike riding, jumping rope, catching and throwing a ball, basketball dribbling, using the left hand to reach down to touch the right foot and vice versa
6. Calming techniques such as yoga, deep breathing and meditation
7. “Feelings checks” to assess your child’s emotions relating to the start of school
8. Returning to a school bedtime and morning routine
