HI my name is Savanna and I am the mother of a 3.5 year old with autism. I recently started selling Origami Owl to help to cover costs of his needs as I have to stay home with him (his anxiety is too bad for childcare although he is in the special needs preschool class at an elementary in Hanover).
My son’s name is Ivan. He has two older sisters so I could tell early on that his development was a little different. It wasn’t just the typical “he has delays” that the doctors (and myself) noticed, but also that he wasn’t extremely organized and learned the alphabet just by watching us try to teach his sister who was five years older. we reached out to the county for early intervention due to a speech delay as well as other signs (anxiety, stemming, difficulty socializing). He started doing am hour a week and now has worked up to Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday FULL DAY and even rides the bus (!!!) He has been able to make friends with the six other kids in his class who are differently able. I love being able to share my experiences with him via social media to help others understand what goes on. He was recently able to go to a family Easter cookout (being outside helps with sensory overload). him being able to go wasn’t just because of the progress him and his priceless teachers have made but because my giant (and I mean giant) family all understand.
They knew he wasn’t throwing a fit or staying away from them because he was a “bad kid.” They allowed him to be himself, warm up, meet some animals first and then realize they weren’t a threat. Educating those we live with and around has been every bit as helpful as working directly with ivan when it comes to his progress. It takes a village and we need to make sure the village is informed ❤
