The Story Of A Conch. Great Book About Self-Acceptance

January 13, 2016 By Carissa Garabedian

Editor’s Note- I am lucky enough to say I know Shannon, we use to work together on one of her other projects when she lived in Richmond. I am so excited for her and touched by the message in this book.
The Story of Conch by Shannon McAfee is a heartwarming story about self-acceptance. Conch experiences a series of adventures (and mishaps) as he travels across the world, landing on different beach-lined shores. With each adventure, his shell is damaged in some minor or major way, and these imperfections embarrass him and make him feel unwanted. He is eventually found by a girl who feels that his imperfections are the most interesting parts about him and she helps him see his life in a new, and positive way.

The Story of Conch was used by an elementary school guidance counselor in her curriculum about Self-Acceptance in Virginia Beach in 2015. It was also used by a nonprofit organization in their “Renewal Project” initiative to help adults cope with living with HIV. We hope that this uplifting story inspires children and adults alike to learn self-acceptance.

The author,Shannon, will be participating in the ‪Multicultural Childrens Book Day‬ event – this is an event to raise awareness for children’s books that celebrate diversity. The goal is to get more of these books into classrooms and libraries across the country. I am truly honored to be a part of this event! Note from Shannon: I am a mom of three lovely, creative, spunky, and unique little girls! They inspire me every day. They spark my creativity and desire to be the best mom and person I can be. I live in Virginia Beach, Virginia, with my three girls, dog, cat, and, last but not least, my amazingly supportive husband. It has always been a dream of mine to write stories that inspire and help others and what better way than through the beautiful art of picture books. I am so excited to start on a venture as a children’s author, especially with my cousin as the illustrator! Our dads are identical twins, I am a writer, and Emily is an artist – I feel like this has been a beautiful pairing in the works and we’ve finally come together to pursue our passion – writing and illustrating. My mission for all of my stories is to encourage each reader to appreciate the person you are – your talents, your passions, your journey through life, and (yes) even your imperfections. All of these things wrapped up together create a beautiful package, which is what makes you, YOU!
