Happy Birthday to my middle child.
Birth order is an interesting thing with much said about how it impacts all we do. For our family, our middle child has had an extra “perk” of having a brother with Autism and an older sister that challenged all that came her way.
Instead of rebelling or shutting us out, our daughter has embraced this role, she has and continues to shine with grace and inner beauty to guide and offer help to all of us in the family. Yes, I am very proud, but I also get sad. Sad that there must be times she wishes she could have it a little easier, times she could shut out the extra noise and times that could just be a little more “normal”.
So, today, I decided to write about her, to share and have her highlighted. So much of what I write about tends to be our son and Autism. Today, it is for her, our middle child.
Dear Sophia,
Today we celebrate you.
You have made parenting a pleasure. You were such an easy baby, you smiled, laughed and appreciated all. That has continued these last 15 years. You have had a life full of adjusting and adapting to your siblings. Many times you may have gotten lost in the craziness of what we have needed to get done, yet you stood by and accepted your role. Today I want to take a moment to tell you that I see you, you are not invisible and when you think I am not looking, I am, and I am bursting with pride.
We are aware of how much you do, how many times it is not easy and how many times you may wish it could be different.
You do not complain nor do you feel sorry for yourself. I know it is a struggle, I know there are times you worry and even get angry. That is ok! I know there are times that you want to run away and hide. Here’s my advice- DO IT! You deserve it, take that break and enjoy it! You are their sibling, not the parent and you should be able to have some down time. Remind us of that.
What I can tell you is that all of these life lessons you have had and continue to learn are what gives your heart and soul the passion you will hold forever. These lessons are teaching you how to be the best person you can be.
The bond you have with your siblings is indescribable. BOTH of your siblings look up to you and admire you, they BOTH look into your eyes with such love, knowing they can trust you and that you are their protector.
Dad & I watch you with pride. We see all you do, we see all you sacrifice and we see all that is unspoken. We know how lucky we are.
When you have moments where you wonder “why me?”, think about this- you are going to reach such incredible heights. You have learned true love, and you know what’s truly important. You live a life that puts others first and that takes a strong mind. You exhibit compassion that astounds all, you have perspective and you can laugh! You will change lives and touch the hearts of many.
All my love,
Your Momma !
